Menstrual Hygiene Health in Tanzania
The Importance of Menstrual Hygiene
In Tanzania, menstrual hygiene health remains one of the most direct and addressable barriers keeping girls out of school.
Social and cultural barriers limit women and girls’ knowledge of menstrual hygiene health, leaving many girls unprepared for menarche, exposed to misinformation, and at risk of increased school absences, early pregnancies, school dropout, and preventable health issues such as UTIs.
In low-resource environments, the challenge is compounded by broken bathrooms, a lack of water, and the absence of sanitary materials on school grounds.
Maji Safi Group has been working to change this since 2014, reaching over 26,000 women and girls across the Mara Region with menstrual hygiene education and sanitary materials.
In 2021, Maji Safi Group conducted a base survey in 13 schools in the Mara Region and found the following:
Knowledge on Menstruation - School WASH (SWASH) Program
To address these barriers, Maji Safi Group developed the School WASH (SWASH) Program, a community-wide approach built on participatory methods where Community Health Educators teach menstrual hygiene health in Tanzania and help teachers, students, and parents establish School Health Clubs.
Since 2014, the program has broken the silence surrounding menstruation across the Rorya, Butiama, and Bunda Districts, increasing schoolgirls’ knowledge and giving them access to the sanitary materials that work best for their needs, including reusable pads, menstrual cups, and period panties.
breaking the stigma
- Educating boys and girls across the Rorya District about menstrual hygiene management through classes and Menstrual Hygiene Health Clubs.
- Informing the entire community about MHH through radio broadcasts and social media.
- Using singing, dancing, and acting to teach at large community events such as Dining for Female Hygiene.
- Providing girls with access to feminine hygiene products, such as reusable pads and menstrual cups.
- Advocating nationally for systemic change as member of the Tanzania MHH Coalition.
Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools and Communities
At Maji Safi Group, we are proud of our impact on rural Tanzanian communities. Since the beginning, we have reached over 26,000 women and girls with education and sanitary materials. From breaking the silence surrounding MHH, we have seen a significant change of attitude in local communities.
Maji Safi Group's Menstrual Hygiene Programs
Maji Safi Group is the only organization in the Mara Region addressing menstrual hygiene health in Tanzania through participatory methods that draw on local knowledge and community involvement.
As the Lake Zone Coordinator of the Tanzania Water and Sanitation Network (TAWASANET) and a founding member of the Tanzanian Menstrual Hygiene Task Force, MSG has advocated for ministry-level inclusion of menstrual cups in national programming and led the development and implementation of the first nationwide government-led assessment of the menstrual hygiene health situation in schools.
This institutional presence means the work does not stop at the community level. It also shapes policy at the regional and national levels.
We work closely with district and regional authorities, advocating for more government resources and collaboration to create profound systemic change through regional and national policy.
